“Cats” sweep up Carlos for £1.5m

ENGLAND – Soca Warrior Carlos Edwards signed a £1.5m deal with the Sunderland Association Football Club (SAFC) of Britain Tuesday as a midfielder for the next three and a half years.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have captured such a sought-after, top player,” said ‘Black Cats’ boss Roy Keane.

“A lot of clubs have been interested in Carlos, so it’s great that he will be here at Sunderland to play his part in getting this club back to the Premiership.”{{more}}

The SAFC nicknamed ‘Black Cats’ eyed Edwards after his spectacular performance on the Trinidad and Tobago National Team in the 2006 Germany World Cup.

He gave a man-of-the-match performance in the country’s opening game against Sweden and also impressed against England and Paraguay – and his displays in the tournament were considered a bright spot in T&T’s tournament.

The 28 year old Edwards started his career at the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force was later signed by Wrexham in 2000. After five years with Wrexham for £125,000 and helping the Red Dragons win the LDV Vans trophy in 2005 he was sold to Football League Championship side Luton in 2005.

Since joining Luton he has become popular with the fans with his flair and ability, winning the Young Members Player of the Season award. He has recently been linked with moves to Celtic, West Brom, Norwich and Luton’s local rivals Watford.

In 2006, Edwards was called up to the Trinidad and Tobago national football team for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. (Caribbean360.com)
