Students get Rotary recognition

The Rotary Club of St. Vincent recognized twenty-one outstanding fourth formers from throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Thursday, June 1, 2006. The students were invited to the Rotary Club’s weekly meeting at the Catholic Pastoral Centre. They were accompanied by parents and teachers. Susan Dougan, Chief Education Officer, represented the Ministry of Education.

The annual occurrence, named “The George Phillips Excellence Award”, is held in honour of this outstanding national and is intended to encourage students to concentrate on exceptional academic performance and social skills. This year’s ceremony was sponsored by the National Commercial Bank (NCB), the St. Vincent Brewery Limited, St. Vincent Insurances Limited, The St. Vincent Co-operative Bank Limited, SVG Air Limited and Pannell Kerr Forster Chartered Accountants. Each student received a copy of Dr. Stephen Covey’s bestseller book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Persons” and a bank account valued at one hundred dollars.

Former outstanding scholars, Wenique Roberts and Duane Allen, were the joint guest speakers at the event. Among other things, they challenged the students to retain a focus on outstanding academic achievement. They challenged the students to continue to work hard at their studies, persevere, and to develop good time-management techniques.

Ruby Phillips, George Phillips’ widow, presented the gifts to the students and was on hand to listen to the brief biographical sketch of her husband. This was prepared and presented by Past President Jules Ferdinand.
