Rock star Mick Jagger and American designer Tommy Hilfigur are among the multi-millionaire rank and file on Mustique who are opting for a cleaner, greener island.

The Grenadine island, managed by the Mustique Company, is already a haven of natural beauty and cleanliness.{{more}}

Queen Elizabeth’s sister, the late Princess Margaret, who owned a home on the island for many years, described it as the cleanest place on God’s earth.

The wealthy islanders want to go a step further and get rid of the fumes emitted by the island’s estimated 250 vehicles, by converting all of the island’s petrol powered vehicles to electricity.

With the support of an American engineering company, the Mustique Company is developing an electric engine they can install in the island’s fleet of ultility four-wheel-drive Kawasaki Mules.

Islanders’ private vehicles will follow if the mule conversions are a success.

“We already have a few electric golf carts on Mustique but they have limited potential because of their small wheels, especially going up hills,” explains Mustique Company head of operations, Peter Ernst.

“We should have a prototype to test in one of the mules very soon.”
