The teachers and students of the Mayreau Government School were the beneficiaries of the generosity of the Alexander family of Norham Road, St. Michael, Barbados, recently.

On behalf of his family, Jerome Alexander handed over personal stationery kits each comprising of six (6) exercise books, six (6) pencils, a ruler, sharpener, an eraser, pens and two (2) boxes of chalk.{{more}}

Alexander visited the school in 2000 after an absence of 33 years. At that time, he pledged that for the five-year period, 2001 – 2005, his family would sponsor the school. The project has the blessing of Alexander’s parents Mary Alexander (Tanty) and Victor Chester Mitchell/Peli who stated that they were not privileged to have the basic educational supplies necessary to complete their primary education, which meant that they left school prematurely.

In a release, the Alexander family said that they hoped the students would use the donated supplies to assist them in realizing their fullest potential. They also expressed the hope that their gesture would motivate other emigrants to assist in the educational development of their homeland.

They also expressed their intention to embark on a similar program in Union Island, at the Mary Hutchinson Primary School for the period 2006 – 2010.
