The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), at its 36th Meeting held in Jamaica on December 2, 2005, paid tribute to Dr. Dennis Irvine and agreed to establish an award in his memory.

Dr. Irvine served as CXC Chairman from 1974 to 1979. He succeeded Sir Roy Marshall who served as the first Chairman for one year in 1973. Dr Irvine was Chairman when the first examinations were administered in 1979.{{more}}

Sir Roy Marshall noted that while he was instrumental in the establishment of CXC, Dr. Irvine had the formidable task of getting CXC off the ground. Reflecting on Dr Irvine’s work at the University of Ibadan, as Vice Chancellor at the University of Guyana, and as a senior staff member at the Commonwealth of Learning, Sir Roy Marshall described Dr. Irvine as a ‘builder’. He certainly contributed to building CXC during his chairmanship and also as a member of CXC committees over the years.

20 years ago he observed that “CXC has lived and grown and hopefully, will continue to prosper.” With his assistance CXC has grown from strength to strength.

Dr. Irvine died only days before the Council held its 36th annual meeting.

Dr. Irvine’s death is a great loss, not only to his family and friends but to Jamaica, the wider Caribbean and the world of education and development.
