The creative cooking skills of Cari-ann Balcombe, a fourth form student at the St.Joseph’s Convent Kingstown have earned her the top spot in the 2005 ECGC Home Economics Competition. Balcombe said that as a future doctor she enjoys cooking and the Food and Nutrition subject would be part of that medical field.

The student admitted she could not come up with a name for her creation on the day of the competition, but her aunt who was taking her to school at the time advised her to call it “Driving to School-Whole Wheat Delight” and she stuck with it. {{more}}Balcombe noted that she made the whole-wheat concoction from a pastry method combined with a basic bread recipe.

She was happy with her huge trophy, but after all the cooking for the ECGC competition, now plans to treat herself to a nice meal from the $1000 prize money and to save the rest. Balcombe also won in the Whole Wheat Bread category.

Second overall was Adel Myres from the School of Nursing who received $500 and also won in the brown rice category with her “Diamond Brown Rice Capsule Casserole. Third was Monel Tittle from the Union Island Secondary with her “Rice Pie Surprise”. She also won in the Parboiled Rice category. Rodel Miller of the St.Vincent Technical College was the Best Overall male and also won the in the White Flour category with his “Rodel’s Twisted Breakfast Loaf.” Sheffesha Cottle of the St.Joseph’s Convent Kingstown placed first with her “Sweet Peas Explosion” in the Peas and Beans category.
