Chief Education Officer Susan Dougan thinks that the current staff at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports is privileged “to be part of the whole process involving the implementation of universal secondary education”. {{more}}
Dougan, speaking at the opening of the West St. George Secondary School in Belair last Monday morning, also described the students at the newly opened school as special since their names would go down in the annals of the school as being the first.
The educator noted that in 2005, all students will gain access to the secondary system, as there will be improved access and equity nationally.
She said that a five-year comprehensive secondary education for all will be available and, in some instances, a six-year cycle. She further noted that the ministry was attempting to raise the achievements of all students and is also hoping that a higher level of learning could be achieved throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She, however, pointed to the requirement for a literacy drive.
