When Hurricane Ivan thrashed Grenada, all of the country’s FM stations were knocked off the air. But help was forthcoming quickly from sister islands St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados.
While the Barbadians boosted the power from their AM service CBC, the Vincentian stations continued to broadcast messages directed at their Grenadian brothers and sisters. {{more}} Sadly though, many Grenadines who had not been adequately prepared for the storm were without batteries for their transistor radios if they had at all.
But with the need for communications within Grenada, WE FM’s managing director and engineer Jules Williams flew down to provide a solution. Within two days a radio station transmitting on the frequency 98.5 FM was up and running from a small room.
