The couple told Searchlight that winds associated with Hurricane Ivan toppled a coconut tree onto the roof which caused part of the house to collapse, damaging a bed and other household items around 2.30 p.m. Tuesday.
Samuel, recounting her encounter, said “I hear the winds blowing and I go in the bedroom and looked out the window. I see the wind blowing the trees. I pull down the window and went back to the bedside. Then I hear the tree drop on the house and I run out the bedroom. I felt frightened. I was alone at home. It was the first time I was experiencing such a thing”.
Samuel and her common-law husband are wondering how soon they would receive assistance in getting a home.
“I don’t have no where to live,” said her common law spouse Elwin Howe. “Me want fuh know when dem ah go geh me help. There ain’t no where to shelter.”
Samuel said Parliamentary Representative for the area, Rene Baptiste visited to assess the damage and promised to construct a temporary shelter on a piece of land nearby.
