Work towards achieving unity, love and respect

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Christian Council congratulates the people and nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on attaining 25 years of political independence. This is indeed a significant milestone in the history of our development, which must be celebrated and cherished with dignity and pride.

More than ever before, it is a time for individual and collective reflection on our responsibility to build a strong and unified nation under God. At the same time, however, it is a challenge to our maturity as a people to demonstrate that we are capable of owning and harnessing our development and progress. {{more}}

The Council shares the joy of the Vincentian people in affirming the theme, “Proud to Be Vincentian: Celebrating 25 Years As A Nation”. We believe that this self-affirmation ought to be the force that defines our positive relationships with each other and therefore an essential element in shaping what we are capable of becoming. There is no doubt that there is an emerging deeper consciousness among our people about our strengths and weaknesses: a sign of maturity. However, we must buttress our individual and collective strengths so that our unity and resolve will be stronger, and as a result our future will be safe-guarded.

The Council celebrates with all Vincentians the accomplishments of individuals, students, families, communities, businesses and others in their various fields of endeavour.

We are encouraged by the thrust in making education at all levels more easily accessible, and the willingness on the part of Vincentians to grasp these opportunities. This could only augur well for nation building.

The Council urges everyone to work towards achieving unity, love and respect for each other.

Just as we are proud of our people’s achievements, we are very concerned about the continuing polarising effects of our politics, the total lack of respect shown to each other, the rampant escalation of crime and violence, the disrespect shown to our aged and disabled, and our inability to address more adequately other social problems relative to our youth and other vulnerable sections of our community.

For us to move forward as a nation and to realise our full potential, we must overcome these stumbling blocks. “Live as free men but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone; love the family of believers, fear God.”(1 Peter 2: 16-17)

The Council implores all Vincentians in every sphere of society to be thoughtful, tolerant and to show respect, concern and love to each other. We call upon the Government and Opposition, community and religious leaders, police and others to have the courage to act responsibly at all times so that justice, peace and tolerance may be the hallmark of our beautiful nation.

Let us continue to pray for all leaders and for each other that we may live peaceful, productive and creative lives.

May the Good Lord continue to bless this lovely Nation of ours.

Major Ronald Ellis,

Rev. Bishop Robert Rivas Rev. Sehon Goodridge
