Tash sings his way to Citylyfe karaoke championship

by Robertson S Henry

January 3, 2020, saw the crowning of a new CityLyfe Bar Karaoke Singing Champion in Andre Tash who dethroned the 2018 defending champion Sherlette ‘Peter’ Herbert.

Singing ‘Make you feel my love’ in the first round, and ‘Hello’ in the second, Tash amassed a total of 469 points, to capture the coveted top prize.

Rockwell Kydd totaled 453 points to secure the first runner-up spot, singing ‘New York! New York!’ in the first round, and performing ‘Wine of your Life’ in the second round.

Taking the second runner-up spot was Kathy Bascombe with 452 points, singing ‘One and Only’ in the first round, and ‘Wet’ in the second round.

Eighteen singers competed for the EC$1,000 first prize, and did not disappoint the patrons who crowded into the Higginson Street establishment, in downtown Kingstown. The large crowd spilled onto the sidewalk, and remained until the results were announced in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

In addition to the prize money and other gifts for the 2019 Citylyfe Karaoke Singing Star, there were attractive prize monies and gifts for the second and third place finishers, along with gift bags for the eighteen competitors, and other give-aways from the sponsors.

Rounding off the top five finishers were Sherlette Peter Herbert with 439 points in fourth place, and Joanna Haynes in fifth place with 425 points.

Organiser of the event Groove Governor said he was extremely pleased with the quality of the contest, as exhibited by the singing talent on display. He also expressed his thanks to the many patrons who were present for the semi-finals on December 20 and 27, 2019 respectively, and also those who came out to witness the finals on January 03, 2020.

He made note of the disciplined behaviour of all, and the support of the sponsors, without which it would not have been possible for “us to enjoy the talent which exists in St Vincent and the Grenadines.”

Persons have already called for a date to be announced for the third version of the Citylyfe Karaoke Star at the earliest date possible. As one patron put it, “It is events like these which always allow someone to be discovered and then who knows … SVG has another singing sensation.”
