Vincies to play in Labour Day celebrations

Vincies to play in Labour Day celebrations

With the count-down to North America’s largest carnival, the West Indian American Day Carnival, (WIADC) which is in its 47th year, the annual event is again set to take place along Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York, and the Vincy-based mas band Mas Production plans to be right in the midst of all the revelry, with its presentation “All that Glitters.”{{more}}

However, this year, mas production would only be involved in Saturday’s Kiddies Carnival parade.

Other Vincentian-connected mas bands that are part of this year’s event are CPI and Devine Mas Band.

Come Labour Day Monday, the parade will commence in the area at Lincoln Terrace Park at Eastern Parkway and Schenectady Avenue, as masqueraders take to the streets in their costumes, ending at 200 Eastern Parkway and Washington Avenue.

The year’s celebration includes five days of celebration, which will culminate with the grand Labour Day parade.

Yesterday, Thursday, Vincentian Shertz “Problem Child” James was set to be part of Caribbean Woodstock: A Celebration of Light, at the Brooklyn Museum.

Another Vincentian set to light it up is former multiple Soca Monarch Gamal “Skinny Fabulous” Doyle, who performs tonight at Brass Fest 2014.

Skinny Fabulous will be on stage with the likes of T&T’s Machel Montano HD, Patrice Roberts and Farmer Nappy and Grenada’s Mr Killa.

Saturday also hosts the panorama competition, slated for the grounds of the Brooklyn Museum.

Dimanche Gras comes off on Sunday, with the kings and queens of the bands, along with legends the Mighty Sparrow, David Rudder and Lord Nelson.

Vincentians, though, as usual, would be putting on the various backyard barbecues, fetes, boat rides and other forms of entertainment on this hectic weekend.

Also this Sunday, St Vincent and the Grenadines will meet Jamaica in the final of the New York Caribbean Football Cup at the Thomas Jefferson High School from 4:45 p.m.

Team SVG beat Grenada 2-1 last Sunday, with Anselmo Mc Donald and an own goal accounting for the victory.

A win for St Vincent and the Grenadines will be the sixth title, and would be the fillip to move Vincentian revellers into Monday’s street parade.

Founded in 1967 by Trinidadian Carlos Lezama, the WIADC will this year have as its carnival grand marshals Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio and Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson.
