The awards show, which is slated to be held on Tuesday, August 6 in Grenada, has been described as the Caribbean’s equivalent to the Grammy, Hip Hop, MTV and BET Awards, where exponents of the soca music art form, are recognized and rewarded for achievement and excellence in various categories.

Williams told SEARCHLIGHT on Monday that the opportunity arose when his management team was contacted earlier this month by organizers of the event, SAO Soca Awards Limited.

“They said they wanted me to be a part of the event and through my management everything was worked out,” he said.

He, however, noted he had missed out being a part of the event in 2007.

“They were interested since 2007, but due to the information not reaching me on time, I was unable to attend then.

“I’m, however, grateful for the opportunity this time, as I will not only perform, but also present an award,” the calypso monarch said.

Williams disclosed that the organizers have requested his 2011 hit, “She Tell Me”, which also won him the Ragga Soca Monarch title that year.

“We have not yet worked out the performance time or how many songs to perform, but that’s the song they requested….

“I am just proud to go out there and represent St Vincent and the Grenadines and my brand, Skarpyon,” he added.

Skarpyon will be performing alongside the likes of Blaxx, Tall Pre, Patrice Roberts and Gypsy among others.

This year’s Ragga Soca Monarch, Lornette “Fire Empress” Nedd-Reid, is also scheduled to perform.

Fire Empress’ 2012 Ragga Soca winning song “Rum Please” is also nominated for Best Tempo Soca in the female category.

Gammal “Skinny Fabulous” Doyle’s “Monster,” which won him the Soca Monarch crown last year is also in the running for Best Tempo Soca in the male category. Shertz “Problem Child” James is the only artist from St Vincent and the Grenadines nominated for two awards. Best Soca Collaboration of the Year, which features, Trinidadian Patrice Roberts with their song “Love Me Carnaval”.

He has also been nominated in the category for Best Song Writer for the Year. (AA)
