Dancers give golden performances

The second preliminary night of the 10th KCCU National Dance Festival was filled with impressive performances, with 15 of the 20 entries receiving gold awards.{{more}}

Performances were seen in the solo, duet and group versions of the Hip Hop, Social, and Creative Folk dance categories, in the event which was hosted at the Peace Memorial Hall last Saturday.

With participation open to schools, community groups and individuals, many primary and secondary schools took the opportunity to showcase the fruits of their extra-curricular labour. Community groups and other individuals also took the chance to become involved and showed the audience that they knew of excellent ways in which their energies could be channelled.

The judges, on the other hand, wereresponsibility for categorizing the dances by the quality of their choreography, delivery, costume and the dance’s overall impact. From the number of gold medals handed out at the end of the performances, it was clear that they were impressed.

The St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown accumulated four gold medals; Renaissance juniors received two, while their senior counterparts also received two gold medals.

The following schools, community groups and individuals each received one gold medal: the Girls’ High School, the Bishop’s College Kingstown, The C. W. Prescod Primary School, the Brighton Methodist School, the Junior Dance Club, Little Saints Dance Group, and Godwin Charles. Four silver medals were handed out to the St Mary’s Roman Catholic School and the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown copped two medals. A single bronze medal was awarded to Kaotic Dancers.

Tomorrow, the third preliminary of the festival will be staged. The focus will then be on ‘Modern Dance’.

The 10th KCCU Dance Festival will culminate on Saturday, October 6, when all gold medal performances will return to vie for coveted awards like Most Outstanding Group, Duet and Solo Performance in each category of the festival. The Most Outstanding Group of the festival will also be announced.
