Four newcomers will face off against 18 seasoned veterans, for a place in the finals of this yearâs national calypso competition.
Three of the four: Javelle âLady Diamondâ Frank, Jerome âParryâ Samuel and Glenroy âSachyâ Samuel are members of the PâTani calypso tent, which also includes long time calypsonian Elliot âMysteryâ Shallow.
The other newcomer, Kahalia âQueen Bâ Beache, hails from the Upstage Calypso Tent, which boasts the most semi-finalists in Michael âLord Have Mercyâ Ollivierre, Shernelle âSkarpyonâ Williams, Fitzroy âBrother Ebonyâ Joseph, Alpheus âObserverâ Duncan and Ronald âRon Bâ Browne.
Producing five semi-finalists for the June 17 competition is the Graduates Calypso Tent with Glenroy âSulleâ Caesar, Maxwell âTajoeâ Francis, George âJah Burkeâ Nedd, Kingsley âHeroâ Roberts, and Linton âSweet 16â Samuel.
Four members of the On Tour Calypso Tent are also into the semis; they are Grantley âIpaâ Constance, Elvis âAbijahâ Abbey, Robbie âSoharoâ Hackshaw, and Derick âMan Sickâ Alexander.
The other semi-finalists are from the New York based Dynamites Calypso Tent: Errol âThe Man Ageâ Rose, Carlos âRejectorâ Providence and Dennis Bowman.
The semi-finals will take place at the La Croix boxing plant, beginning at 8 pm.
Eleven calypsonians will be chosen to come up on July 3 against reigning monarch Joyce âJoy Câ Creese, who will be going for her third straight title. (JJ)
