All gold for Questelles Government School
The final week of preliminary competition in the ninth annual, Kingstown Co-operative Credit Union (KCCU) sponsored National Dance Festival, has secured nine more entries into next Saturdayâs finals.{{more}}
The Questelles Government School topped the gold medal count last weekend. The school captured gold in every category it competed in, on a night when the judges and audience witnessed performances in modern dance, at the close to filled Peace Memorial Hall in Kingstown, last Saturday, September 25.
The final night of preliminaries saw what could arguably be considered the keenest competition to date of the four-week festival.
The Questelles students, tutored by Maxine Browne, took the gold medals in the schools category for their performance of Up and Outwards, The Circle Talks, Girls Night Out and Without Limits (a duet).
The other gold medalists on the night were the CW Prescod Primary School with their performance of Jubilee and the Bishopâs College Kingstown, performing Burden Bearer.
Gold medal winners in the Community Groups category were the Junior Dance Club (He is Always Present and We Colour Your World) and a duet by Juanita Philips and Nicholas Bartholomew, of the Arabesque Dancers, performing love Despair.
The Arabesque Dancers also collected seven silver medals in the Junior and Senior divisions, with the renaissance Dancers taking two, and bronze going to the Touch Down Dancers, Anthony Bibby and the duo of Janine Knights and Valerie Haynes.
Silver medalists in the schools category were the Lowmans Leeward Anglican School, the Brighton Methodist, Park Hill Government, Fair Hall Government, Kingstown Preparatory, Biabou Methodist, St. Maryâs Roman Catholic, Barrouallie Government, South Rivers Methodist and the Bishopâs College Kingstown.
Last Saturdayâs final week of preliminary action means that this Saturdayâs finals will feature 25 gold medal performances in traditional, creative folk, hip hop, social, as well as modern dance.
The dancers, schools and groups will also be competing for individual and group awards.
The festival, in its 9th season, is organized by the Ministry of Culture. (JJ)
