Mardi Gras – Out of this world!

After winning the Sections of the Bands competition with their portrayal of Aliens, Guinness Blondie Bird and Friends was again in winners’ row when the copped both King and Queen of the Band titles. Despite that, they were still unable to capture the elusive Band of the Year trophy.{{more}}

Bird and friends placed third in the overall Band of the Year Competition which was judged on Mardi Gras (Carnival Tuesday) by accumulating 538 points; sixteen points less than second placed Digicel Nelson Bloc, and 22 less than winners KFC SVG Players International.

The mas band clinched the king and queen crowns with their portrayal of “Galaxy on Fire” and “Jupiter” for their Party In Space presentation.

Galaxy on Fire, displayed by Simone Richardson beat out six other competitors vying for the title.

Richardson relegated Shaunelle Mackenzie of Nelson Bloc into second place with her portrayal of “Opium: the Forbidden Flower” in the band’s

production of Shanghai Nights.

Third was Jenilee Glasgow of Players with her portrayal of “Exotic Bird of Paradise” for their 2008 presentation of Exotica: Wonders of Nature.

In the King’s category, Jupiter, displayed by Atiba Lockhart, beat Melbourne Artisans’ Immortal Chatoyer worn by Gordon Boucher into second, while Andrew Sutherland of Heineken Dragons portraying Pachacuki- The Earth Shaker was third of the seven competitors.

Blondie Bird and Friends had won the Sections of the Band title on the night of the Miss Carival Pageant, with Aurora Borealis from SVG Players International placing second and Eclipse from WE FM First Caribbean Singer Lynx third.
