SVG gets first ever arts festival

Youngsters from Contemporary Young Artists’ Movement have joined with other artists to organize the first ever arts festival in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The festival entitled “And So I Came To Know” follows a wake of successful exhibitions hosted by the group at the CYAM art gallery at Russell’s Mall.{{more}}

The festival will take place over the first three weekends in December and features performances in music, dance, spoken word, poetry, visual arts, film, as well as lectures and debates focusing on the role of arts and culture in society.

The Contemporary Young Artists Movement CYAM formed from the graduates of the St Vincent Community College Art and Design A-level program and includes all current students of the program. Its emphasis is on generating creative expression, bringing young people together to express their ideas to strengthen creative relationships.

“The artists involved share the belief that creative expression is fundamental to national development and that it should be actively fostered through a vibrant artists’ community,” a release from CYAM stated. “The Arts Festival is an initial effort to this end, bringing young people together in an atmosphere of creative exchange.”

The festival launch will be a multi media show of the artwork of Art Graduates of 2006 and will conclude with an appraisal and feedback from artists and the public designed to generate future activities.
