Friends Dance Company dominates Dance Festival

Seven gold medals, four silvers and three bronze were awarded to performers in the Modern Dance Category at the Kingstown Cooperative Credit Union KCCU, National Dance festival last Saturday.

It was the Friends Dance Company, however, which dominated the festival with three gold medals. Their use of coordination, grace, and unusual body poses in their pieces “The Whisper” and the ultra sexy piece entitled “Let’s Forget” was different from the norm, while the selection “He Warms My Heart” was a heartwarming piece.{{more}}

Also giving an outstanding performance was the Allegro Dance with two gold medals and a bronze. Allegro copped the top medal in the group performance category with their lively Broadway style piece complete with top hats and baton entitled “On Top O’ the World.” The audience was then brought to a hush as incest and other forms of child abuse were beautifully depicted through dance with a cleverly choreographed piece called, “Fatal Violation” and was again impressed with Allegro, this time in the solo performance category when the promising dancer Nicholas Bartholomew did ‘Introspection.”

E’cole De Ballet with their “Enchanted Forest” and “Masquerade” pieces were highly commendable.

The use of costume was excellent and choreography brilliant but they however need to work on their timing.

It was beautiful to see a cadre of boys in the Calliaqua Anglican School’s performance called “I Won’t Give Up” while the Stubbs Primary school also proved that the future of dance was secure.

Avenue Dancers, Rhythm and Soul and the Junior Dance Club also gave outstanding performances and could be seen giving prominence to technique.

A total of 10-dance company’s entertained a packed Peace Memorial Hall over the weekend in the Modern Dance Category.

The KCCU National Dance Festival continues at the same venue on Saturday September 16 with the Hip-Hop and Social dance categories.
