‘Sick’ wins calypso New Song title for ’06

Derek “Sick” Alexander added another notch to his royal belt with the 2006 Calypso New Song title. Sick, from the South Leeward district of Questelles, took the title with his rendition “D Key” at the Chamber of Commerce car Park in Kingstown last Saturday night. A former South Leeward monarch, Sick has established himself as a force in the calypso circles.{{more}}

A large crowd gathered for the event, which marked the official launch of Vincy Mas 2006.

Other finalists included two-time New Song winner Fitzroy “Brother Ebony” Joseph who sang “Dey t’ief yo.” That song gave his opinion on his treatment in the calypso finals over recent years.

Ronald “Ron B” Browne took listeners down memory lane and into the nostalgic era of the art form with a composition called “Ole time calypso.”

Glenroy “Sulle” Caesar, the defending calypso monarch, paid tribute to the Steelband in his rendition “Dust it off.”

Vincent “Groovy D” Kennedy, an experienced calypsonian, did the song “Dying.” He experienced problems owing to the late arrival of his music scores.

Noel “Defoe” Castello did a spirited presentation of a song called “Freedom.” Marlon “Gams” Williams completed the line up with a song called “We lost.”

The band Signal provided musical accompaniment.
