The film of 1970s TV show, The Dukes of Hazzard, has topped the UK box office in its first weekend on release, despite largely hostile reviews from critics.

The US comedy made £1.7m between Friday and Sunday, bringing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s four-week run at No.1 to an end. {{more}}

Horror movie The Cave opened at No.5 with a disappointing £563,761 take.

The children’s film The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3-D fared even worse, opening in eighth place.

The week’s other new entries, teenage drama The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and Indian comedy No Entry, both opened outside the Top 10, at 13 and 14 respectively.
