The 2005 Calypso season promises to be exciting. This has been buttressed by a training workshop staged by the Carnival Development Corporation, in conjunction with the local Calypsonians Association aimed at taking the artform to a new level.

Former Trinidad and Tobago monarch Morel “Luta” Peters, supported by the experienced Samuel “Brigo” Abraham, acted as resource persons at a two-day event last weekend. {{more}}Over 40 persons, mostly calypsonians, took advantage of the opportunity to sharpen their skills, while a number of persons, usually called upon to judge during the festival, also attended.

Calypsonian Association president Hassan Kennedy and PanKaimas chairman Hugh Ragguette co-ordinated events during the workshop held at the University of the West Indies School for Continuing Studies.

The next major focus on calypso will be the Queen of Calypso competition scheduled for Victoria Park, June 11.

Princess Monique, the defending Queen of Calypso may perhaps be using the event to fine-tune her preparation for her defense of the national monarchy set for Dimanche Gras, July 3.
