Mother’s Day dance
Motherâs Day was made extra special for too few mothers who were treated to a superb evening of dance, song and poetry last Sunday.
The event put on by Center Stage Productions, in collaboration with Iguana and Royâs Inn, featured dance troupes from SVG and Barbados. The inclement weather did not dampen the excellent quality of the performances though it prevented the use of the well-decorated outdoor stage. The show had to be held in a more intimate atmosphere under covers. From Barbados came Danse National Afrique whose several high-energy numbers pieces showed their experience much to the delight of an appreciative audience seated in a U formation. The Tuk Band from Barbados was a joy to behold with their pieces and rhythms reminiscent of the serenading drummers of vintage St. Vincent Christmas.
From SVG the Avenue Dancers and La Gracia performed creditably. So did Enya Kyaagbala whose Indian styled belly dancing routine was pure grace.
Perhaps the surprise performance for the evening was performance poet Tari Cadougan who did several numbers as fillers which must have gained him a whole new audience outside of those who knew him from the Closet Writersâ Collective.
Fatty Dan also performed one of her 2005 numbers in her usual cool manner.
This was an evening that only suffered from underexposure. Thousands should have witnessed a show of such quality. Colette Jones must be commended for this.
Alas there were too few persons. But this is the plight often suffered by the best quality offered here. The story of the arts here they say. It all begs an encore though.
