• Workshop continues build up for Carnival 2005

A workshop at the School of Continuing Studies of the University of the West Indies this weekend marks a continuation of the build up to the 2005 carnival festival. The spectacle is aimed at judges and at enhancing the masquerading component. {{more}}

This exercise follows the successful launching of Vincy Mas 2005 which culminated with the Best New Song competition last Saturday.

Trinidadian cultural exponents Christina Yorke, Hollis Ayers, and Glendon Morris are resource persons for the session which will be followed by a counterpart exercise for the Calypso segment next weekend.

Tuesday June 28 will be a big day for a number of young artistes. That’s when the Junior Calypso Secondary and Primary levels as well as the Junior Soca Monarch competitions are scheduled.

Defending Junior Calypso monarch Amunik Martin from C.W. Prescod will be challenged by seven contenders in the Primary section. They are: Franieca Glasgow from Park Hill Government, Colin McIntosh, Richmond Hill Government, Xojuanna Scrubb: Kingstown Anglican School, Cherry Joseph, Pamelus Burke, Donella Power: Calder Primary, Shonice Daniel Lowmans Leeward Anglican, and Chequana Gilkes.

Jade Bowens from Bishops College will defend the Secondary School title. He will face seven prong attack for the title from Phamojah Williams: Georgetown Secondary, Shantel Nichols: Emmanuel High School, Elforna Toussaint, Ronique Fraser: Bethel High School, Niellon Williams; St. Joseph Convent Marriaqua, Renecia Louie Emmanuel High School, Jolene Bentick: North Union Secondary.

The Soca Monarch title will also be up for grabs. Kara ‘Dymon’ Johnson will be looking to repeat her success from last year. But the Intermediate High School student faces challenges from St. Martins Secondary’s Shrevel ‘Smac’ McMillian who made it to the New Song Soca contest, St. Joseph Convent’s Cameisha Hunter, Pamelus Burke’s Cherry Joseph, Zamfir Adams and Kenisha Gordon: Bethel High School, Esther Alexander: Emmanuel High, and Deron John: St. Vincent Grammar School.

The show will be coordinated by experienced musicians Joffre Venner and Junior Sutherland.
