I don’t love my boyfriend anymore

Hi Rosie,

Thank you for all your help over the years. I just have a quick question regarding my boyfriend; I don’t love him anymore and I want to call it quits. However, we are in grad school together and plan to move to another state together to start our careers and lives. Our families get along and we have been going out for over five years now.{{more}} I just have grown out of love with him and can’t see me being with him for the rest of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I care for him a lot and I see him more like a brother than lover. Oh, also for the record, there isn’t anyone else; I just don’t want to “settle” at 26. Thanks again for your advice.

It’s over for me

Hello it’s over for me,

A Happy New Year to you. I can see you are making resolutions to start with a clean slate and in your case I can’t say that I blame you. No one should ever “settle” for a situation.

Good for you that you are honest about your feelings. By doing this, you are not leading this young man on and you are also giving both of you a chance to start afresh without the baggage of someone cheating due to unhappiness. Personally, I wish more people would do what you are doing, which is making a clean break and allowing each other the opportunity to find that someone special.

Never settle, no matter if you think you have no way out; there is ALWAYS a way. To stay with someone who doesn’t make you happy, who does not complement your personality, who abuses you, in whom you’ve lost interest in that is just an injustice to your spirit. So, I wish you well when you do speak to him; be very honest, yet kind when explaining where you are now; hopefully he will understand and appreciate you for it in the long run.
