Hey Rosie!
February 26, 2010

Embrace your new life!

HEY, ROSIE,

I am living overseas now. I am only 16 years old and I love this guy so much, and he says he loves me and he wants me to come home to meet him.

I am going to be 17 years old. I am really cofused. We were dating since before I left home. I miss him. We talk every weekend and I am really confused. What shall I do? Break up?{{more}}

Please help me.

Dear Please Help Me,

So let’s get straight to the heart of the matter. You have moved away from home and you have left your sweetie behind, right? As I was reading your letter, I realized that you must have just moved away within the last 6 months to a year. I think you are going through a very homesick period.

I understand that you miss him, your surroundings, maybe even your friends, your routine etc. But at 16, you want to move back home for him? That doesn’t add up for me. Let me throw this at you. If your 17-year-old boyfriend had moved away to a new place, would he give up his new life because his 16-year-old girlfriend asked him to? I really don’t think so.

I seriously understand what it feels like to feel shut off from familiar surroundings. But take a step back and look at your new move as a fresh and unwritten page in your life. You will make new friends, develop new interests, a new school and so on. Give it a chance. Let all these new and overwhelming changes soak in for a minute.

Now I am by no means saying that you shouldn’t be friends with your boyfriend at home and still talk to him. He is your friend first. However, I think you both should be very real about your current situation and put your cards on the table. You are both too young to plan a future together. You can’t support one another financially. Also, who do you think would let you go back home to be with your “Boo” for good? Not any parent or guardian that I know! I would just agree at this stage to be great friends. One can’t tell the twist and turns that life will take you on down the road. But now is not the time.

Embrace your new life, the changes, the opportunities. Be the person that you are destined to become. Have a clear vision and path as to what it is you would like to achieve. Your education is number one at this time. Remember you can also reach out to counselors at school or in your community when you feel overwhelmed. He is now your friend, leave it like that. Here is a link that I think might be of help to you: http://teenlineonline.org/teens/.

Good luck, and things will continue to improve each day. Just give it time.

Rosie.
