‘Mas Debating’ puts Chewalee even with Shena

Chewalee “Rumist” Johnson has described his win in the first ever Virtual Calypso Competition as historic.

Johnson, performing a song called “Mas Debating” tied with Shena Collis for the first-place spot in the competition which was streamed live on Sunday night from the Envy Nightclub at Arnos Vale.

Collis performed a song called “Quashegunny”.

“I have to be proud of that win because it is a win in a competition that was held for the first time,” Johnson told SEARCHLIGHT on Monday.

“I am also very pleased about the crown as it is something to add to the brand that is ‘Chewalee Music’, another stepping stone, another milestone,” the artiste who took the Ragga Soca Monarchy in 2016 commented.

His song is about the bacchanal that happens yearly around Carnival time about which Mas band is the best, while it also hints at masturbation.

The versatile artiste, who also placed second in the first ever Virtual Ragga Soca Monarch competition one day earlier said he is grateful to all the persons who have been supporting him.

He noted that he does not mind sharing the monarchy with Collis as they are good friends who support each another in different ways.

“The competition is a really great concept especially since Carnival was cancelled this year,” Johnson said while adding that he is hoping that if the competition is held again, more businesses support it.

Chewalee is a member of the Graduates Calypso Tent while Collis is a member of the Upstage X-perience.

The Virtual Calypso Competition saw Glenroy “Sulle” Caesar placing third with “Winning Habit” while fourth place went to Ronald “Chico B” Veira with “In Quarantine”.

The other competitors were Da Vincy with “Who Am I to Grudge”, Grantley “Ipa” Constance with “Is We” and Ronald “Ron B” Browne with “Sweet Sweet Soca Jam”.

The initiative was sponsored by Hairoun Beer and Digicel.

The virtual competitions — Soca, Ragga Soca and Calypso, came about through a partnership between STV Online, Ignite Consulting, Envy Nightclub and 4th Dimension Productions.
