WICBC, cricket fraternity mourn loss of outstanding employee

The local cricket fraternity was awakened by the news Wednesday morning of the passing of Lyndoll Coombs, a person who had given long service to the Windward Islands Cricket Board of Control (WICBC).

Coombs, who would have turned 40 on December 12, died in the USA, after a brief illness.

She served as secretary for a number of years, while the WICBC’s secretariat resided here, as well as a member of the Local Organizing Committee of Cricket World Cup 2007, and was part of the then SVG Women’s Cricket Association.

Following the transfer of the WICBC office to Dominica at the end of 2016, Coombs moved over to the National Sports Council, as an employee.

Former president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association, as well as president and CEO of the Windward Islands Cricket Board of Control Lennox John said he was “crushed terribly” on hearing the news of her death.

John described Coombs as “an absolutely wonderful person….She was a hard-working individual and came to be known by a lot of persons around the Caribbean, who would have had reasons to contact the office and earned the respect from them.”

“One of her hallmarks was her telephone ethic… Many persons from the other islands would have complimented me on her pleasant manner of answering telephone calls … She was a tower of strength to the office,” John remarked.

Continuing his tribute to Coombs, John noted: “She did not play cricket, but served the sport well…. She did not have children of her own, but loved children…. Many children who would have come to the office from time to time would have been attracted to her and she to them.”

Such was the overall impact of Coombs’ off the field contribution to St Vincent and the Grenadines and the Windward Islands cricket, that she was one of the honourees at the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association Inc’s gala dinner and award ceremony last year.
