Yacht attacked, local man found with broken neck

Investigations are ongoing to determine if there is a connection between a dead body found floating in Chateaubelair Bay Wednesday morning and an attempted burglary on board a yacht Monday night.

The body, identified as that of 20-year-old Dalson Laborde of Petit Bordel, was discovered at about 7:30 Wednesday morning by fishermen from Fitz-Hughes after the body snagged their boat.

SEARCHLIGHT understands that the body was found in the same general area where fishermen found an abandoned rowboat with a cutlass on board, early Tuesday morning. The body was retrieved by the Coastguard and brought ashore at Richmond.{{more}}

Just 12 hours before the rowboat was found, the Coastguard came to the assistance of Andri Khokhlou, captain of sailing yacht Kitrida, who reported that three men from a rowboat had entered his vessel as trespassers with intent to commit theft and had chopped him on his right forearm with a cutlass.

Khokhlou, a native of France was taken to the Chateaubelair Health Centre by the Coastguard. He was treated and released.

Kitrida, a 44-foot yacht, has its home port in St Barts, and had sailed into Chateaubelair harbour from Bequia on Monday around noon. Khokhlou was assisted on the yacht by his Vincentian friend Curtis.

Knokhlou pulled up anchor and sailed north Tuesday afternoon, after being interviewed by police.

When SEARCHLIGHT arrived at Richmond where Laborde’s body was brought ashore, the area had been cordoned off and was being guarded by police officers from the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) and the Major Crimes Unit (MCU), with district medical officer Dr Francis Murray also being on hand.

Laborde was a former student of the Petit Bordel Secondary School, a footballer and track and field athlete.

Police say a post mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of death, but a police source told SEARCHLIGHT that it appears from examination of the body that Laborde’s neck was broken. (AC)
