Teen charged with 2014 murder of Green Hill resident

A 19-year-old prisoner has been charged with a murder that occurred two years ago.

Green Hill resident Deshawn Slater stood before the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with causing the death of Aninka ‘Ninka’ Stowe on October 20, 2014.

SEARCHLIGHT, in our issue of October 24, 2014, reported that Stowe died in the arms of her boyfriend Leon Small, moments after being shot twice while she made her way out of a shop at Green Hill.{{more}}

Stowe, who was 23 at the time of her murder, was shot in her right shoulder and on the left side of her chest, in the presence of her 8-year-old daughter.

On Tuesday, Slater was not allowed to plead, as the matter is indictable.

The matter was transferred to the Serious Offences Court, where a preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin September 5.

A woman, who appeared to be Slater’s mother, was furious after hearing the charge.

She was adamant that Slater did not commit the murder.

Clearly upset, the woman stood outside of the court arguing before making her way down to street.

Slater is currently serving a three-year-sentence, after he pleaded guilty to possession of an illegal firearm in February 2015.

During his trial on the illegal firearm charge, Slater told Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias and police that he had found the weapon in a field while digging for dasheen and was planning to turn the weapon over to police officers.

Investigations are being led by PC 240 Dwight James (AS)
