Diamond take gold in Calliaqua Football

Debutants – Diamond United did not need to dig deep last Sunday afternoon at the Calliaqua Playing Field, making light work of perennial winners of the Calliaqua Football League – GTM Prospect United.

At two ends of the age range, the youthful Diamond United outplayed and outscored the aging Prospect outfit, four goals to one.{{more}}

A hat-trick from the competition’s top goal scorer Deomaji Samuel and a single item from Jimmy Providence combined to remove Prospect from the throne. A position, reports say, they have occupied for the past 10 years.

A Jolanshoy Mc Dowald item prevented total embarrassment for the durable Prospect team.

Sharing in the joy of Diamond United was one of the driving forces behind the effort – Camille Isaacs. One of two females who serve as the main management team, Isaacs expressed delight in the achievements of the team. She told SEARCHLIGHT that it was a great feeling for the team, given that most players are now getting into competitive football.

In getting to the championship match, both teams were dismissive of their opponents in the semi-finals. The usually high scoring Diamond United slammed seven past Choppins United.

Two goals apiece from Curlan Joseph and Kevin George, added to goals converted from Deomaji Samuel, Kendal Joseph and Jimmy Providence, accounted for Diamond’s tally.

In the other half of the last four, Prospect again silenced their once arch-rivals Maxx Strikers, this time downing them 5-1.

Ojoy Degrads scored a brace, and there was one each from Lezlo McKenzie, Reginald Payne and Osei Thompson.

For Maxx Strikers’ goal, a free kick was netted by Iteba Browne.

Maxx Strikers were at the receiving end of another drubbing in the third place play-off, which took place last Saturday, when Choppins slammed them 7-1.

Doran Quashie – five and one each from Kenroy Joseph and Esron Duke made good of the goal feast.

A penalty converted by Calvert Parris was all Maxx Strikers had to show on the score-sheet

Trophies and prizes won in the competition will be presented at a date to be announced by the organizers.

Many persons have expressed satisfaction in the manner in which the league was administered this time around. (RT)
