Athletes get field day at Arnos Vale

Athletes got a chance to gauge their throwing skills last Saturday morning at the Arnos Vale Two Playing Field, during Team Athletics SVG’s Throws Classic.

They were put to the test in the Discus and Shot-put events, in the first activity in the Track and Field calendar for 2015.

When the distances were tallied in the discus segment, {{more}}Bernard Sutherland of the Central Leeward Secondary emerged the top thrower in the Male Under-18. Sutherland’s 30.31 metres was the furthest in the age group.

The female winner in the Under-18 was Zoanna Smart of the Thomas Saunders Secondary, who flung 17.06 metres.

Earlson Cruickshank, representing X- Cel, recorded 33.54 metres to top the Male Under-20, with Kerina Hooper of the Thomas Saunders Secondary School registering a winning mark of 16.08 metres to cop the Female Under-20 category.

The X-Cel pair of Hollis Greene and Nickietha Toney had the best distances among those 20 years and over. Greene’s winning throw was 22.69 metres and Toney’s 20.03.

Toney was also in the winner’s circle in the Shot-put, as she outlasted the small field with her put of 10.71 metres.

Another X-Cel representative, Keron Arthur, had the best distance in the Male 20 and Over. His throw was 9.71 metres.

Meanwhile, John Compton of the St Vincent Grammar School won the Male Under-18; Alexis St Louime of the Thomas Saunders Secondary School – the Female Under-18; the Central Leeward Secondary’s Kimron John – the Male Under-20; and Danielle Da Silva of IT-DAT – the Female Under-20.

Compton – 12.86, Louime – 6.85, John – 11.77 and Da Silva – 9.53 metres, outdid their competitors.

Field athletes will have another date, January 24, when they will turn to the Jumps, again at the Arnos Vale Two venue.

And, Team Athletics SVG has indicated that for the Jumps Classic, it will not be entertaining late registrations.(RT)
