Legal fraternity usher in new law term with ecumenical church service

Members of the local legal fraternity turned out in their numbers on Wednesday to usher in a new law term, which began with an ecumenical church service at the St George’s Cathedral in Kingstown.

The lawmakers, members of the judiciary and executive, participated in the service that culminated with a ceremonial march to the High Court in Kingstown, {{more}}where newly appointed acting high court judge, Her Ladyship Pearlette Lanns reviewed the honour guard.

At Monday’s service, Reverend Canon O Samuel Nichols delivered the sermon, and called on those responsible, to be of sound character, as they exercise prudence.

The priest informed the congregation that obedience was innermost to the formation of character.

“Obedience is not only a virtue but its central not only to our lives but also to the teaching of the other virtues.”

“The virtue of obedience opens the door to the other virtues and to the acquisition of prudence.”

Apart from the prayers and intercessions, members of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Bar Association also made a contribution to the service, by performing a rendition of “My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

This year’s service was held under the theme “Judicial independence for a just and better society.”

The law term runs until July 2015.(JJ)
