Touring theatrical group brings ‘Hamlet’ to SVG

Last Friday, Vincentians were treated to a production of William Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ – performed by a visiting theatrical group from the United Kingdom.

Globe to Globe Hamlet, which is on a two year world tour, delivered a crisp and well-rehearsed performance on September 12, {{more}}at the Villa campus of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC).

This is the first time that the stage area at the institution has been used for a production such as this one – which enjoyed a turnout of hundreds.

Deputy director of the SVGCC Nigel Scott said that he was pleased with the attendance, and wants the public to know that the space is available for hire.

“We want people to know that there is a stage at the Villa campus… and that we are open for business as far as shows are concerned,” he enthused.

Globe to Globe Hamlet is coordinated by the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre based in London, England, and is aiming to take ‘Hamlet’ to every corner of the world.

The tour began on April 23, 2014 – which marked the 450th anniversary of the playwright’s birth – and has visited 48 countries so far (including SVG).

Artistic director at Shakespeare’s Globe Dominic Dromgoole has described the two-year tour as a “completely unprecedented theatrical adventure”.

“The spirit of touring and communicating stories to fresh ears was always central to Shakespeare’s work,” stated Dromgoole.

“By train, coach, plane and boat, we aim to take this wonderful iconic, multifarious play to as many fresh ears as we possibly can.”

Globe to Globe Hamlet visited Barbados before coming to SVG, and performed last night in Grenada. It will travel outside of the region before returning to perform in Trinidad in October. (JSV)
