Chateaubelair student struck by stray bullet

A Chateaubelair teenager is fighting for her life at the Female Surgical Ward of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) after she was shot in the throat last Saturday morning around 3:00.{{more}}

Sweet-I Robertson, 17, a fifth form student of the Petit Bordel Secondary School (PBSS), received a gunshot wound to her throat as she and a friend were walking to her sister’s home at Petit Bordel. Her friend was also grazed by gunshot.

Kemron Louie told SEARCHLIGHT that he was walking Robertson home and when they got to the end of the playing field, they saw a crowd gathered. An argument was taking place, and a young man of Petit Bordel was threatening to shoot. Louie said to avoid the crowd, they went under the verandah of the community centre, and when the shooting began, he stooped, but Sweet-I remained standing.

Louie said that he is unable to explain the sadness he feels, but he hopes and prays for the best for his friend.

When SEARCHLIGHT visited the hospital on Wednesday, Louie, along with Raquel, Sweet-I’s sister; Verrol, her uncle, and Cliforna ‘I-Live’ Robertson her mother were all there.

Robertson had been keeping a vigil at her daughter’s bedside since Saturday.

“I am leaving them to God and hope for the best,” I-Live said.

Robertson also said that sometimes her daughter tells her that her body is feeling numb, and another time, she says she can’t feel anything.

Raquel, with whom Sweet-I lives, said that her sister was doing well at school and was looking forward to writing her “pre” exams next week. The family has consulted a Neurologist in Trinidad who has agreed to see the patient, but the family will have to come up with EC$50,000 for travel, medical and consultancy fees. The family is appealing to the public and corporate citizens to lend a helping hand to defray the cost of sending her to Trinidad.

A police report released on November 1 said: “Information is that Sheldon Hooper of Petit Bordel had an altercation with another man, when he shot at the man with a gun. The bullet reportedly struck Robertson, who was standing in the area.”

Hooper is assisting the Police with their investigations.
