Dragons, Players, Sion Hill and GHS light up Victoria Park
The youngsters came out in full force over the weekend for their time in the spotlight.{{more}}
That light is expected to shine once again this afternoon in the finals of the Junior Calypso and Soca finals at Carnival City Victoria Park.
Eight artistes are expected to contest the Primary category of the calypso competition: Sonettte Williams of the CW Prescod Primary, Ottis Caine of the Fair Hall Government, Roxelle Michael of the Calder Government, Alexia Alexander of the Fancy Government, Dellan Matthews of the Greiggs Primary, Teishanna Franklyn of the Kingstown Anglican, Dalisha Williams of the Park Hill Government and Kritina Christopher of the Layou Government.
The secondary category will also be contested by eight students: Sasha Joseph, Alexandra Small and Shade Baker of the St. Josephâs Convent Kingstown, Phylicia Alexander of the Intermediate High, Syprian Isaacs of the St. Vincent Grammar School, Donella Power of the Girlsâ High School, Cachley Yorke of the Campden Park Secondary and defending champion Cassian Lavia of the Sandy Bay Secondary.
Last weekend the light shone brightest on the members of the KFC Heineken Dragons Mas Camp and SVG General Services Players International, the Girlsâ High School and the Sion Hill Euphonium Steel Orchestra.
On Saturday the young Dragons and Players captured the Junior Band of the Year title in a tie for first place with their portrayals of âWarriors, Myths and legendsâ and âMyths of Edenâ respectively.
âKing of Pop- Tribute to Michael Jacksonâ, presented by Guinness Y De Lima, HITZ FM 103.7 Blondie Bird and Friends took the third position, while Digicel, HITZ FM 103.7, Nelson Bloc Mas Campâs âWe are⦠a Celebration of Wise Choicesâ placed fourth and âOle People Sayâ, a First Caribbean, WE FM, KBB Shipping Singer Lynx presentation placed fifth.
The uptown judging was won by Players International, with Dragons placing second and Nelson Bloc coming in third.
The judges gave the Junior Queen of Carnival nod to Reneisha Rose of Players International, who portrayed Messenger of Light, while Jelani Niles of Blondie Bird and Friends won the Junior King of the Band title portraying the Wizard of Oz.
On Sunday the future pan men and women played their hearts out in the Junior panorama, which saw the Girlsâ High School taking the top position in the schoolâs division with their rendition of Winston Sosoâs âCarnivalâ.
They beat last yearâs winners the St. Josephâs Convent Kingstown into second place; they played a cover of âShip Sailâ by Poorsah, while the CW Prescod Primary School and their rendition of âCardoâ by Alston Becket Cyrus placed third.
The Sion Hill Euphonium Steel Orchestra took first place in the Community Based Category with Johnny Rebelâs Musical Ride.
In second was Genesis with their rendition of Winston Sosoâs Pan Yard, and third was South East Steel Orchestra with the Field Marshall Hit âCocaine Jumbieâ.(JJ)
