Senior Civil Servant guilty of stealing
A Senior Civil Servant has been given three months to repay money she stole from the government. If she does not pay, she faces a prison term of six months.{{more}}
On Tuesday at the Kingstown Magistrateâs Court, 51-year-old Marcia Burgin-Davis of Richland Park pleaded guilty to five of the charges for submitting fraudulent invoices for catering services to various departments at the Central Planning Division for meetings which never took place. At the time, Burgin-Davis was Senior Executive Officer at Central Planning Division.
Burgin-Davis, a grandmother and a mother of 6, was charged with 65 counts of deception in respect of a series of invoices, amounting to over $30,000, submitted to the Government between 2005 and 2006.
According to information revealed in court, Burgin-Davis authorized payment on the invoices and payment was made by the Government Treasury. Some of the payments were made to Burgin-Davis in person, while others were deposited to a bank account in her name at the First Caribbean International Bank.
In mitigation given by her lawyer Ronald Marks, it was intimated that Burgin-Davis has undertaken to pay back the monies owed on the other 60 counts.
She has 3 months in which to repay the $2,190 in respect of the 5 charges to which she pleaded guilty or she faces a term in prison for 6 months.
She is also placed on bond for two years in the sum of $10,000 or 1 year in prison. Each of the counts on which Burgin-Davis pleaded guilty to has a maximum penalty of 2 years in prison.
Burgin-Davis had been placed on suspension from the Public Service pending the outcome of the case brought against her.
