Chief Magistrate Sonya Young sentenced the 42-year-old Dorsetshire Hill resident to two months in prison at the Serious Offences Court on Tuesday, March 10th after he pleaded guilty to indecent exposure.

The facts read in court stated that at approximately 5: 45 pm on October 1, 2008 at Heritage Square, the virtual complainant was walking in the company of another woman. DeRiggs then walked up to her and pulled down his pants and exposed his penis. The 24-year-old woman then ran away from DeRiggs and started crying.

The matter was reported to the police. DeRiggs was arrested and charged.

The prosecution indicated to the court that DeRiggs was in the habit of harassing the young woman. It was also stated that the matter was becoming of grave concern to the young woman’s family.

An astonished Chief Magistrate Young said she could not begin to fathom why a man of DeRiggs’ age would expose himself in public. “You are a big man and you’re pulling down your pants in public. What’s wrong with you?” asked the Magistrate.

In his explanation to the court, DeRiggs said he did not pull down his pants to show his private parts to the virtual complainant, but was doing so to show them to the other woman she was in company with. Magistrate Young responded, “I am sending you to prison, you will learn there not to pull down your pants again.” (KW)
