Young man shot dead at ‘D Stretch’ bar, Campden Park

In what was another bold, cold, act of violence, 20-year-old Shaun ‘Meagie’ Williams was shot to death last Saturday, May 17th, and became this country’s thirteenth murder victim.

According to eyewitnesses, a man went into the “D Stretch” bar in the Campden Park Industrial Estate and told those present that Williams owed him $400.{{more}}

One witness told SEARCHLIGHT that one of Williams’ friends told the upset man that he (the friend) was willing to pay the debt, if Williams did not come through.

This apparently did not suffice.

At around noon, Williams, a resident of Campden Park, walked into the bar, and without a word being said, SEARCHLIGHT understands, the assailant is said to have grabbed Williams by the neck with one hand, and shot him in his stomach with the other.

As his life flowed out of him, Williams stumbled downstairs and ran to his aunt’s nearby residence before collapsing. He was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

“He wasn’t a troublesome boy. He loved children, and he has a seven-month old son,” said one aunt, who did not wish to be named.

Friends of Williams, who also did not want to be identified, told SEARCHLIGHT that the young man will be remembered for his energy, his love for children, the way he made people laugh but most of all, his love for dancing.

“He was the man when he hit a dance,” said one friend.

“He knew how to keep a dance lively. He was the energy of any party he went to. He had everybody dancing,” another young man told SEARCHLIGHT.

William’s tragic demise is not new to his family.

On September 16, 2004, Williams’ brother Kamal met his death, in even more gruesome circumstances.

Kamal, known as ‘Baw Baw’, then 18 years old, was discovered at Canash beach at Ratho Mill with a gun shot wound to his forehead and stab wounds to his chest and hands.

Two Trinidadian nationals were charged with his murder, but the case was later discontinued.

At press time, 24-year-old Kamara Richards of Old Montrose was assisting police in their investigations into Shaun’s murder, and was expected to be charged before then end of the week, a police source told SEARCHLIGHT. (KJ)
