Police are trying to get to the bottom of the operation, which is suspected to involve close to 30 persons, including six or so employees.

Randy’s Supermarkets’ manager Randy Kennedy explained to SEARCHLIGHT how the scam, which he suspects has been going on for months, worked.

Kennedy explained that persons were given payment slips for empty bottles they supposedly brought to the drinks outlet on Tyrell Street.

The way Randy’s system works is that after the empty bottles are brought to the drinks outlet, persons take the dockets to the mini mart next door to receive payment.

It was in January that Kennedy started to notice that some names were appearing regularly and for big payments for bottles.

A check revealed that many of these payments were for phantom bottles, and hundreds of dollars were being lost daily.

“It is tough, really heart breaking. If I wasn’t a man that trusted in the Lord, I don’t know how I would have handled this,” Kennedy said.

“After you open up your heart and assist some workers, and to be treated like this, it’s tough,” Kennedy said, with a tone of disappointment.

“And they had no mercy. They just did it continually,’ he said. (KJ)
