BIG STEP FOR LYTTLE

Another Vincentian basketballer is basking in the spotlight. With memories of Sophia Young’s exploits still fresh, Sancho Lyttle is bidding for a Women’s National Basketball Association entry.

From Houston College, Sancho in position Centre hits the Draft action in Seventh position in an event to be telecast tomorrow Saturday, April 16.{{more}}

She was member of the Conference USA All-Tournament Team, an All Conference USA First Team 2005, and an all Conference USA Second Team 2004.

Lyttle, from Rockies overlooking capital Kingstown has shown dexterity in a number of sports. She was a sensation at Inter-Secondary School Sports for the Girls’ High School, where her versatility was well known. Her record in netball matched achievements in track and field.

She represented the Senior National Netball squad while at the Under-16 and Under-23 levels. Such was her adaptability and when it came to Basketball, Sancho proved her ingenuity.

Six foot, four inches, with a sturdy body, Sancho’s athleticism has served her admirably. She teamed up with Sophia Young in defence for the Under-16 Netball squad. Her ball-handling was already adept, and with natural gifts, Sancho has been a sensation on the basketball court.

Another of Wayne Williams’ proteges, she has grown on the US circuit. Tomorrow’s parade is just another step in her journey.

Sancho was at the Madison Square Garden Training Centre in Tarrytown, New York from April 8-10 for the 2005 WNBA Pre-Draft Camp. The camp offered WNBA coaches and general managers the opportunity to evaluate the skills of the incoming collegiate draft class in advance of the 2005 WNBA Draft

The top women college basketball players were invited to the 2005 WNBA Pre-Draft Camp, including Houston centre Sancho Lyttle, Liberty centre Katie Feenstra, Penn State guards Tanisha Wright and Jess Strom, Texas guard Jamie Carey, Auburn guard Natasha Brackett, Temple guard Cynthia Jordan and Vanderbilt forward Ashley Early. Also invited were several players who competed in the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Indianapolis, including LSU guard Temeka Johnson, Tennessee guards Shyra Ely and Loree Moore, Michigan State guard Kristin Haynie and centre Kelli Roehrig and Baylor forward Steffanie Blackmon.

The 2005 WNBA Draft begins at noon Eastern Time at the NBA Entertainment Studios in Secaucus, New Jersey.

The WNBA will tip off its ninth season Saturday, May 21, 2005 with a full slate of exciting match-ups, including the defending WNBA champion Seattle Storm against reigning MVP Lisa

Leslie and the Los Angeles Sparks at Key Arena beginning at 4 p.m. EDT.

Opening day will also pit the 2004 WNBA runner-up Connecticut Sun versus the Detroit Shock at the Palace of Auburn Hills, the Houston Comets against San Antonio Silver Stars at the SBC Centre, the Phoenix Mercury against the Sacramento Monarchs at America West Arena and Charlotte Sting hosting the Washington Mystics at Charlotte Coliseum.
