Woman tries to withdraw charge against former lover

Woman tries to withdraw charge against former lover

Although a woman decided that she didn’t want to continue with the charge against a former lover who maliciously wounded her, she was too late in expressing this intention.

Rafique Jackson had already pleaded guilty to the charge of, on December 13, 2020, unlawfully and maliciously wounding Martina Cupid, in Glenside Mesopotamia.

The court heard that the two had been in a relationship, and the young woman went to Jackson’s house on December 12 to sleep over. The following day at approximately 6:05 am she awoke and Jackson tried to hug her. Cupid pushed him away, which caused Jackson to become annoyed, and he punched her, and told her that he thought it was a good time for her to leave. Jackson apparently began to take her things outside, and Cupid began packing to go home. During this process, he picked up an adapter and scraped her forearm. He also threw water on her. She went to change her clothes, and when she tried to leave again, he threw more water on her. She returned this action by throwing water on him.

Jackson then rushed at her and started to beat her. When she fell to the ground, he continued to beat her. As a result, she received some injuries.

Cupid reported the matter to the police, and Jackson gave a statement to the police admitting to the offence.

The 32-year-old mason had no previous criminal offences before the courts.

He could not remember how long he and Cupid had been together when Senior Magistrate Rickie Burnett asked him at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court (KMC) on December 21.

However, his former lover said that they began dating in January, 2020.

The young woman of Belmont indicated that she did not want any further action to be taken in the case.

The magistrate informed her that the matter had gone past that.

“If you don’t want no action why you go to the police?” Burnett commented, contemplating that, based on the facts of the case, it wasn’t something that had happened for the first time.

It was claimed that it had happened two or three times before.

“Yeah that’s three times too many, it should not happen at all,” the judicial officer stated.

Cupid informed that they had been trying to get back into each other’s lives.

The magistrate told her, “Persons are unhappy you know? When women come to court to drop cases against men who are abusing them, the public is outraged…” They say that the state should take over the matter and prosecute it.

Nonetheless, he imposed a $1000 fine on the young man. The desired compensation is also to be paid to Cupid by March 31, 2021, or Jackson will spend nine months in prison.

On the same morning, another young woman, Melanie Richards, expressed to the prosecution that she did not want to go ahead with the case against her boyfriend, Yoroy Nedd.

She swore to this before the magistrate, confirming that she came about this decision of her own free will.

The charge that Nedd had received concerned a December 8 incident during which Richards was allegedly assaulted causing actual bodily harm.
She was asked what she would do if he beats her up in the future.

Richards replied that her father told Nedd what he would do to him if he beat her.

It was revealed that Richards had gone to the police public relations department to inquire why Nedd wasn’t being arrested.

Richards explained that Nedd has a small child to take care of.

She snapped her fingers as she walked out the courtroom.
