Duo charged with gun, ammo possession

Two young men pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of illegal ammunition and one firearm, yesterday at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court.

DeShawn Slater, 20 and Lerom Barrow, 25, of Green Hill, were charged that they did have in their possession on February 3, in Kingstown, five rounds of .38 ammunition and one Smith and Wesson .38 special revolver, without a licence.

The prosecutor did not object to bail, but asked for an amount of around $20,000 to be set. Senior magistrate Rickie Burnett, stating that firearms are serious matters, obliged.

However, after a short adjournment, he stated that the amount was too high, and for consistency purposes, he would reduce it to $10,000.

The two are to report to the Central Police Station every Monday, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., until their trial begins at the Serious Offences Court on February 28.

Slater’s surety was accepted and he walked out of the court free, but up until court adjourned for the day, Barrow’s surety was a no-show.
