37-year-old man jailed for cocaine possession

A 37-year-old man who yesterday pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine got jail time for his actions.

Dwight Weekes pleaded guilty to possession of 19 rocks of cocaine when he appeared before the Serious offences Court on October 9.

The evidence given before the court was that on October 6, in the vicinity of the bridge at the Arnos Vale playing field, uniformed officers on patrol spotted the defendant acting suspiciously. A search of his person revealed a black plastic bag containing 19 rocks of cocaine.

Although the defendant pleaded guilty, he attempted to say that he had only found and picked the bag up just before the police officers came.

Unsuccessful in his attempt to explain his possession of the drug, Weekes was given four months in prison by Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias.

In sentencing Weekes, the Chief Magistrate said that she has a no tolerance policy for the drug and that “so many people become less than what they are because of this deadly substance.”(KR)
