Man charged with causing grievous bodily harm placed under strict bail conditions

One Chateaubelair resident may have some difficulty in enjoying this year’s Carnival festivities, as he has been placed under strict bail conditions for allegedly striking another man with a stone.

Rashuan Stephens is charged that on May 28, 2017, at Rose Bank, he caused grievous bodily harm on Gilanzo Stephens of Rose Hall.

Since the charge is indictable, he was not required to enter a plea.

Last Wednesday, senior prosecutor Adolphus Delpesche objected to bail, before informing the court that the victim is still warded at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH), being treated for a blow to the forehead with a stone.

Delpesche said the victim’s injury form says there is a fracture of the frontal bone, adding that the doctor has described the injury as very serious, with the victim slipping in and out of consciousness.

Stephens was remanded for seven days, pending a progress report on the victim. However, on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, the court heard that Gilanzo was discharged from the hospital and so Delpesche lifted his objection to bail.

Instead, a request was made for a sufficiency of surety and bail conditions.

Bail was granted in the sum of $7,000, with one surety and Stephens was placed on a curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

He was ordered to surrender all travel documents and stop notices have been placed at all ports of exit and entry.

The Chateaubelair teen, who indicated to the court that he also resides at Montrose, must have the express permission of the court to leave the state and must report to the Central Police Station every Monday and Thursday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

He was also ordered to have no contact with Gilanzo.

His next court date is September 5, 2017. (AS)
