Man who admits to selling drugs for living sentenced to jail

A Lowmans leeward man was yesterday handed an eight-month sentence, after he told police he deals drugs for a living.

When Calvin Peters appeared before the Serious Offences Court, he pleaded guilty to having 1,395 grams of cannabis on May 13, 2017.

On Saturday, around 11:50 p.m., PC Roban boarded a bus at Chester bus stop en route to Kingstown and smelled the odour of cannabis.

He kept Peters under observation and stopped the bus at the Biabou Police Station. The officer handed Peters over to officers there, who found nine bags containing the drug in his bag.

He was cautioned and replied, “Please give me a chance, I am doing it for a living,”

Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias said to Peters’ credit, he pleaded guilty at his first opportunity; however, that is where his credit ended.

She stressed that he had the audacity to tell the police he is doing it for a living and although he denied saying so in court, she pointed to his history, with law enforcement to support what they quoted him saying.

Peters has had possession convictions in 2010 and 2012.

Before handing down the sentence, the Chief Magistrate cautioned that his type of living is prohibited in SVG, adding that his charge did not warrant financial repercussions. (AS)
