Dorsetshire Hill resident gets four-year jail sentence

Dorsetshire Hill resident Shane Davis will spend the next four years in jail.

The sentence was handed down last Friday by Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias when Davis reappeared before the Serious Offences Court.

Last Thursday, Davis pleaded guilty to having one Manufrance Saint-Etienne Shotgun and four shotgun cartridges without a license, both without a license issued under the Firearms Act.

Davis was arrested at Dorsetshire Hill on January 10, 2017 when Detective Constable 865 Joseph saw him loitering with the firearm in his hand.

When he was searched officers also found a pair of black latex gloves, a black jersey, a black hair net and dark coloured jeans in his knapsack.

However, during his trial, Davis’ lawyer Grant Connell held the position that his client had found the firearm and intended to take it to an officer known as Corporal Maloney, aka ‘Drive By’.

Prosecutor Elgin Richards pointed out that the charge was a serious offence, adding that the aggravating factor was the clothing found along with the firearm and strongly recommended a custodial sentence.

Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias ordered that Davis be remanded into police custody until Friday while she considers his sentence.

When Davis returned on Friday he was sentenced to serve four years in prison as it relates to the firearm and seven months as it relates to the ammunitions. Both sentences would run concurrently and a confiscation order was made on the items. (AS)
