Man accused of robbery turns himself in

An Edinboro man was yesterday granted bail in the sum of EC$5,000, after being charged with robbing a man more than $1,000 in local and US currency and items valued over EC$900.

When Akeem Bess, 26, appeared before the Serious Offences Court yesterday, he was charged that on February 16, 2017 at Edinboro, being armed with a gun, he robbed Selwyn Adams of Ottley Hall of one brown leather wallet, valued EC$25; EC$700 in cash; one house key valued at EC$30; two Mitsubishi Pajero jeep keys valued EC$40; one SVG driver’s licence card valued EC$100; one KCCU ATM card valued EC$15; one BOSVG ATM card valued EC$20; and one First Caribbean Bank ATM card valued EC$10. A total value of EC$940 and US$150 in cash and at the time of so doing and in order to do so put the said Selwyn Adams in fear of being then and there subjected to force.

Bess was not allowed to plead, as these charges were laid indictably. Instead, a Preliminary Inquiry into the matter is scheduled for May 31, 2017.

Prosecutor Elgin Richards made no objection to Bess’ bail. He, however, asked for reporting conditions and no contact with either the virtual complainant (VC) nor witnesses.

Bess was then granted bail in the sum of $5,000 with one surety. He is not have any contact with the VC or witnesses and is to report to the Central Police Station every Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Last Friday, police issued a ‘Wanted Ad’ for Bess in connection with the robbery. He turned himself into police on Saturday, accompanied by a lawyer.

The Edinboro man was also placed on a 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.
