Trinidadians with possible links to local criminals arrested

Police have stopped two Trinidadians, who came to this country illegally, from possibly linking up with local criminal elements bent on doing crimes. On Tuesday, the two Trinidadians, Ishmael Mohammed and Keno McPhee, appeared before the Magistrate’s Court in Kings-town on immigration charges.

They were fined EC$800 forthwith or six months in prison and the magistrate ordered that they be deported.

Up to press time, the fines were not paid.

The men are said to have entered the country sometime between December 14, 2016 and January 14, 2017.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Renold Hadaway said that the two men were the first Trinidadians detained here for the year and the police are working with overseas authorities to ascertain whether or not they are persons of interest.

“I must say, however, that because of the upsurge of criminal activities leading into 2016, we would have received intelligence that foreign nationals, our neighbours Trinidad in particular, came to our shores with intention to work with criminals here and we are happy to report that we have since apprehended two of those such persons who are in custody at the moment,” said Hadaway.

He noted that there is a mechanism in place for catching persons who enter the country illegally, but because of the nature of the operation, the police cannot say what the method is.

“…But we are watching them. Just simply put, law enforcement agency authorities are watching criminals out there as they cross or attempt to cross the shores or whatever. There are eyes out there. We have eyes out there and that’s the most I could tell you,” said Hadaway.(LC)
