Magistrate warns teen to stay away from victim

Bail has been granted to a teen charged with stabbing her child’s father after the Crown failed to update the court on whether the virtual complainant had been discharged from the hospital.

After spending a week in police custody, Omega Cupid, 18, of Largo Heights, was on Wednesday allowed bail in the sum of $6,000 with one surety.

Cupid is charged that on December 17, 2016 at Glen, she wounded Desmond Chance, 23, of Glen, with intent.

She was not allowed to plead, as the charge is indictable. However, when she appeared before the court on December 20, 2016, the Crown asked that bail be denied, as Chance was nursing his wounds at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH).

The Crown also asked that Cupid’s bail hearing be postponed for one week to await a report on Chance’s prognosis from the doctor.

But when she reappeared before the court, the prosecution was unable to inform the court whether or not Chance had been discharged from the hospital.

And so, magistrate Bertie Pompey granted Cupid bail, but warned her to stay away from the victim Chance.

Police say that Chance was stabbed twice at the back of his neck, three times in his back and three times in his shoulder.

According to the investigating officer, Chance was stabbed with a 10cm blade, and suffered from nine cm deep stabs.

He was discharged from the MCMH on December 20, 2016 after being hospitalized for three days.

Cupid is expected to appear before the Serious Offences Court on January 4, 2017, when a Preliminary Inquiry into the matter would be held. (AS)
